Positive Impact & Responsible Travel
We invite you to join us at Matemwe Retreat as we seek to make a positive and sustainable impact through responsible tourism.
Asilia Approach
Our goal as Asilia is to be a role model in sustainable tourism. At the heart of our organisation is the conviction that world-class travel can go hand in hand with improving livelihoods and conservation of nature. We strive to create a lasting, positive impact everywhere we operate. We believe in better.
Any sustainable contribution must ultimately begin with oneself. This means we buy locally where possible. It means we reduce our footprint by limiting fossil fuel and use sustainable energy sources such as the sun, recycling water and reducing waste. The remainder of our carbon footprint is offset by supporting local forest projects.
Asilia is proud to be the first travel company in Africa to achieve the highest 5 star
GIIRS rating
and
B-Corporation
status. And yet, we trust we do even more. By being creative and developing new models for travel we try to further increase benefits for nature and local people.

Positive impact at Matemwe
We are working hard to put our aspirations into action and make a meaningful impact on conservation and community development in the Matemwe area.
Some of our actions at Matemwe include:
Environmentally friendly waste management and recycling both at the Lodge and the surrounding community
Energy saving practices
Local procurement of materials and food
Matemwe and its guests support the school in Kigomani, the neighbouring village, by donating books and equipment through the Pack for a Purpose initiative. Please see
www.packforapurpose.org
if you’d like to know more
We also assist in financing classrooms for the school and sponsor promising students for further education
Like all Asilia camps and lodges, we offset the carbon emissions from our fossil fuel consumption through a local community forestation program in Tanzania and investments in renewable energy sources
We Support...
CONSERVATION, COMMUNITY, ECO-TOURISM, COLLABORATION
In Matemwe we have been the largest local employer for the past two decades and have been heavily involved in community development and financial support in the local village of Kigomani.
